1.
Write a note on how the three men hold their
respective tools, is it a sensual experiences ?elaborate ?
Answer:-
The present poem “ digging “ was written by “seamus Heaney (13th
april 1939- 30th august 2013). He was an irish poet, play right ,
translator and lecturer & the recipient of the 1995 nobel prize in literature.
He was awarded a life time recognition award.
The poem
begins with the speaker at his desk. He begins his writing . he gets distracted
by the sound of his father outside. He is
working in the garden and this sends our speaker into a spiral of memories
about his father working in the potato fields,
when the speaker was a young boy. the memory stretches even further back
to his grand father and the hard work
.he did as a peat harvester.
They fed their family with their sweat and labour. Thus two generations lived on agriculture and the occupation
changed in the third generation as Heaney became a poet.but he compared his pen
with the spades of his father and grandfather .there is a change of instrument—spade
became a pen.
After the speaker’s memories ,we find speaker at his desk ,ready to get
to work on his writing . he has respect towards the work done by his father and
grandfather . he doesn’t wish to carry a spade like his father and grandfather.
For him, the pen represents what he will pass on that is he will dig with his
pen. The poet creates an imaginative link between his profession as a poet and
what his father and grand father did.
